It was in 2001 that the Laguna II, a saloon aimed at embodying 'lifestyle' driving, went into production. It was an era of incredible innovation, with various new equipment attributes that helped customers take advantage of their vehicle to the maximum.

However, the passengers of these cars were still required to use their keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers were determined that this was a huge issue for many people.

So,  renault scenic key  decided to incorporate a keycard that is contactless into their vehicles and create an system that would allow users to unlock and start their cars with just a wave of hands. The result is the card key which is currently found on the majority of Renault vehicles. The card can be found located in the ignition barrel, or in the center console the car will open when the card approaches, and secure itself automatically when moved away. The first hands-free cards were introduced in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon. This car was designed to be the ideal lifestyle car of the 21st century. However, despite a detailed design brief that was based on more than 6,000 customer interviews looking at their lifestyles, habits, and expectations, Renault ran out of time to create prototypes and test all possible uses.

Bernard Dumondel was the product leader on Laguna II at the time. He used his hotel room key to unlock his car. He was of the opinion that an automobile key could be created with the same magnetic strip used for the key.

In the years that followed, the card was hailed as an innovative technology and is now offered in two out of three Renault vehicles. Although smartphones are in the process of replacing it, Renault has chosen to utilize these new technologies without letting the hands-free card slip by the wayside.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free card of Renault was an innovative piece of technology when it was introduced twenty years ago. The exterior is the same, but the technology has been upgraded to make it easier to use and harder to hack.

It can't be used to open the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle unless it is activated by the driver. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are programmed to detect whether the key is inside or outside. The key will work from a distance, allowing you to start the car's ignition but not to unlock the doors. This is to protect you.

The wireless remote control transmissions of the system employ a rolling-code. This reduces the risk of someone intercepting a control message and retransmitting it in order to gain access, but does not remove it. [1]
